Journey to Pretty River

After a hellish week overall, my mind was reeling. I knew I had to cover a lot of miles this weekend but I could not think straight. My mind appeared to be in several places at once and I almost lost the desire to run. My friend - Mike L. (because I know a lot of guys named Mike, I will distinguish by last initial) - came to the rescue and enticed me to drive up north for three hours of hiking on the Bruce Trail. The overall mileage would be about half of what I was supposed to do but the time on my feet would be great. How could I refuse? I was sold on the idea.

The next morning, I got myself together, packed the car, and hit the road heading towards Collingwood. On the way there, I altered my route slightly. The detour was not bad at all. What blew my mind was the fact that I seemed to end up driving behind the slowest drivers. I mean... Who would drive 60km/hr in an 80km/hr zone?! I know I would not... :-)

It seems that CityTV is truly everywhere. They seem to be looking for news the fun way out in Grey County.

By the time I met with Mike at my destination, I was pretty much all worked up. Part of the reason was because of the drive, and part of it was because I kept replaying the events of the week. As soon as we parked and got our stuff together, we took off on our hike.

The trail conditions were mixed with snow and mud along with ice in a few sections. The chosen route took us through a section of Blue Mountain - not close to the ski resort though. The route was hilly and challenging and there was never a dull moment. We even had to navigate across streams.

As I had forgotten my camera in the car, I used my phone to take some of these shots. These two shots were taken at the top of the bluffs. In the first photo, you can see Wasaga Beach in the distance. The second shot looks towards Devil's Glen.

On the Pretty River Side Trail, we encountered the Famous Dead Tree. Of course, I just had to try it out...

While the way out was mainly uphill, the way back was mainly downhill. When we got back to the cars, we both agreed that the hike was the best thing for us. For him, asking me to come up and hike gave him a reason to leave the house. Winter time is not the greatest for him and he has been studying a great deal. Can we say cabin fever? For me, it helped to have a friend to talk to. Mike had sensed that I was reaching a breaking point and he helped lighten the burden I was carrying. I have gained some perspective from our hike together. For that, I am truly grateful...

Now speaking of perspective... Here is a sign I encountered in Primrose... You know it's a recession when (To read the sign, click on photo to enlarge)...
