I have received an email from one of my friends indicating that Monica Scholz is going to do something quite extraordinary...
In 2001, Monica set a world record for the most 100M foot races completed. She completed 23 that year. For 2010, Monica is looking to set another world record for the same feat... Monica is looking to complete 30! All I can say is wow... Now, I'm not sure if that is going to include the Badwater Ultramarathon as Monica does this race every year. I can only imagine that it would count though.
One thing I can say about Monica - she is one of the smartest runners out there. She makes running 100 miles look really easy. She always has a smile on her face and she can carry on a conversation too. She is also very inspiring - whether you are running the same race as her, or sitting on the sidelines. She is always one of the first runners to encourage and share the energy with others. She is totally into having fun out there and it really shows. My first encounter with Monica was back in 2003 when I ran my first trail race. It was during the Conquer the Canuck event and I only did the 25K event that year. She totally mastered the event, sailing through the 50K Saturday and the Marathon Sunday for a total of 92.2K. I know I was inspired by her and made it my mission to get to know her.
Fast forward to 2009... I look back at that year thinking that I would never run an Ultra but remembering the statement that I let slip - "Hmm... maybe I'll try the 50K..." When I thought I was muttering to myself, I realised that some of my new friends witnessed it and I had to do it. Part of my motivation for sailing through the 100s was Monica. From fun run to race time, her encouragement of all the runners was instrumental in our individual successes - especially for Kinga, Stephan, and I who were going through it for the first time.
I have already noticed that Monica has been confirmed for a few races already. Some of the races that I know of so far (from word of mouth and confirmation lists) include the following:

- HURT 100M
- Rocky Racoon 100M
- Sulphur Springs 100M
- Mohican 100M
There are lots more that will definitely have to be confirmed. However, I will be looking forward to tracking this feat as 2010 rolls along.
Watch for updates, this is going to be exciting :-))
