My First Restorative Yoga Class

For most of the past week I felt that I needed to add another dimension to my yoga practise - one that will give me a chance to slow down and recharge. I got to the point that I had to try a restorative class.

In this class poses are held and supported for a longer period of time. This allows the muscles to relax and hold a deeper stretch.

Getting to the class was challenging. Because of the Tamils protesting downtown, getting to the train station was a challenge. My ten minute walk stretched to twenty because of the crowds. I managed to catch my intended train with one minute to spare.

After I got home and got myself organised, I left for Kula. The class was pretty full by the time we set up our props (cushions, straps, blocks, blankets, and sand bags)and got started. This class failed to disappoint. I was happy to learn some restoration techniques that I could do at home. By supporting the poses that we are holding, we are promoting relaxation of the target muscle group and encouraging a deeper stretch.

When I left the class, I actually did not feel so tight. The gains achieved were subtle, but they were great all the same. I intend to add this class to my schedule for Fridays. It is a wonderful way to end the work week, while loosening me up for a weekend of running.

After leaving class, I ran some errands and stopped at Scooter's Roller Palace to wish my godson, Kyle, a very Happy Sweet 16th Birthday. His friends were there and they all partook in the skating, pizza, and cake. I hung around for a bit and gave his younger brother pointers on how not to fall backwards on skates before he got brave and took to the rink on his own for a few laps - much to the suprise of his mother (an old friend from high school) who realised that I put him up to it. I then chatted with his parents for a bit before heading home to prep for the next day.
