Today was the second annual Family Day - Ontario's newest statutory holiday. This holiday was Premier Dalton McGuinty's gift to us after he got re-elected as Premier.
When I woke up this morning, I resolved to get some form of physical exercise. My ultimate wish was to hit the Bruce Trail for an afternoon of trail running but as it got later, I decided to settle for the gym instead. I learned that Lorene was down with a head cold so pool running was off for today. Also, the gym was on holiday hours. When I got to the gym, I quickly organised my outdoor running gear and headed out the door.
The sun was shining bright at 17h00 when I started my run. I elected to take the park path north to the Brampton/Caledon border. There were lots of people out and about walking their dogs and otherwise enjoying the sunshine with families and friends. When I got to the conservation area north of Wanless Road, I encountered thick sheets of ice. It was so thick, I had to shuffle around it for a long stretch. At this point, it was 17h50 - sunset time. I knew that if I wanted to get off the trail and onto the streets, I would have to hurry up and get to Mayfield Road. I made it to Mayfield road shortly after conquering the ice. I still had enough time to make it to Sandalwood Parkway and onto the streets from that point. This meant conquering the ice again. When I got to the ice patch, no matter how careful I was, I somehow managed to go down on it. Luckily, there was no major mishap from the fall.
I was able to make it to Sandalwood and onto the roads for the run back to the gym just before twilight gave way to night. I really pushed it for the run back this time around. While my start was sluggish due to tight muscles recovering from Saturday's hills, once I was in the groove and warmed up, I was just flying. I made it back to the gym right at 19h00 - just enough time to do a 1Km cooldown, and some light core work and stretching prior to hitting the showers and heading home.
